14/04/13 Mountain Slayer club ride!

On Sunday the 14th we are going to kick off the spring season in style by challenging ourselves to take on 3 of South Wales’ mountains in a row. The club will be riding in two groups; both setting off from the car park location below. The first mountain to tick off is Maerdy [1m – 7%] which has a few short kicks followed by a sharp descent featuring hairpins, so get those brakes checked before we set off! The next to follow is the Rhigos [3m – 5%] which is scenic beyond belief and features a steady drag to the top (where there might be an ice cream van if you’re lucky).

After another long twisty descent only the Bwlch [2.5m – 6%] remains for the normal group to climb with tired legs and it’s alpine hairpins up the valley ridge. The final long descent winds into the Ogmore valley and from there three final ‘bumps’ lie in the way of the car park and any snacks you were wise enough to leave in the car!The faster group’s route will bear right at the top of the Bwlch to complete it’s full length [4m – 5%] and then down arguably the best descent in S.Wales off the Bwlch, rolling along until it’s time to get out of the saddle for the Cymmer dig [0.5m – 8%]. After that there’ll be 10 miles to recover on the flat before hitting the ‘mini Bwlch’ and then joining the remainder of the normal group’s route.

This is not a ride for the faint hearted and it’s certainly one to push yourselves on. However, as always with our rides nobody will be left behind and we will regroup at the top of every climb. Neither routes have dedicated food stops so please ensure you bring enough supplies/clothes and bike equipment to see you around the whole route. Two people will be leading each ride so please speak to them before we set off if you have any questions.
